

Russell Chalberg passed away peacefully at home on Friday, August 21 with his wife by his side. Russell was born in Austin and lived in numerous parts of town during his lifetime including Hyde Park, Tarrytown, Bouldin Creek, Lake Austin, Lake Travis, Shoal Creek, Highland Village, Northwest Hills, & Balcones Woods. He graduated from “old” Austin High on Rio Grande and attended the University of Texas before enlisting in the Army Air Corps during World War II.
In 1955, Russell began work at Ellison Photo, a retail camera store on Congress Avenue and he later purchased the business in 1963. Russell was President of the Downtown Austin Rotary Club and was a Paul Harris Fellow. In 1969, he donated thousands of black & white images of historic Austin to the Austin Public Library.
He retired from the camera & film developing business in 1982, and was then able to travel extensively. Some of his fondest friendships and memories were made with their motorhome club. He is fondly remembered by his children taking them camping, boating, fishing, snow skiing, and mini-biking.
Russell was preceded in death by his parents Sylvia Chalberg & Herbert Chalberg.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Marylyn Chalberg, and his children and their spouses; Allan Chalberg & Laura, Lori Hunt & Brian, and Daryl Chalberg & Amie. And by his grandchildren; David Hunt & Courtney, Jennifer Welsh & Alex, Kelly Satre & Brennon, Mark Chalberg, Devin Chalberg, and Drew Chalberg. And by 2 great-grandchildren; Elizabeth Leigh Hunt & Calvin Russell Satre.
There will be a small, private ceremony and burial service for immediate family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Tarrytown Methodist Church, the Salvation Army, or the charity of your choice.
