Russell was born on April 23,1936 in Midland, Texas to Russell and Mildred Shrader. During his lifetime, Russell accomplished many things: he earned his Eagle Scout and graduated from the University of Texas with a degree in mechanical engineering. He also went on to receive his MBA from Trinity University, and Russell served in the U.S. Army Reserves. He was a longtime valued employee, and retired from City Public Service in San Antonio. Russell also enjoyed being an active member of the following groups: UT Exes, the Fort Sam Houston Optimist Club, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the San Antonio Woodworkers Guild.
Russell enjoyed riding his bicycle around his beloved town of Windcrest. On Friday mornings, he could be found at Whataburger enjoying breakfast with a wonderful group of friends. Russell loved family vacations to Estes Park, Colorado and hiking in Rocky Mountain National Park. He had a knack for fixing things, and you’d find Russell with unique gadgets to accomplish almost any task. His family knew nothing was ever truly broken until Uncle Russell said it was broken. Russell was authentic, generous and never had an unkind word to say about anyone. Russell’s life demonstrated a positive, kind, giving, and unselfish nature and a contentment grounded in his faith and belief in Jesus Christ.
Russell was preceded in death by his father, Russell, and his mother Mildred. He is survived by two sisters: Diane Sue Shrader of Ft. Worth and Virginia Ann (Muffy) Shrader Mitchell of Dallas; his brother-in-law Ronald Mitchell of Dallas; two nieces: Amy Harrison and Jill Mitchell; a nephew, James Mitchell and wife Robin, as well as two great nieces and one great nephew.
A graveside service will be held Friday, August 27th, 1:00 pm at Austin Memorial Park: 2800 Hancock Drive, Austin, Texas 78731. A memorial service will be held at a later date in San Antonio.
