It is with great sadness that we convey the passing of our mother, Ruth Wilkinson Lewis, on May 22nd. Ruth was born in 1919, the third child of John and Myrtle Wilkinson of Bogata, Texas. Her beauty and spirit of adventure took her to Dallas where she worked for Neiman Marcus and represented them in a Life Magazine photo spread. She married and gave birth to daughter Linda and son John before embarking on a multi-faceted career including many years as the State Senate receptionist, followed by many years as a dorm mother at both boys' and girls' dormitories at the University of Texas. She was known as Momma Lou and was a second mother to many students. She opened luxury apartments in Houston in the 1970's before returning to Austin to conclude her working years at the State Capital. Surviving to cherish her memory are daughter Linda and Rick Brown, son John and Scarlett Lewis, grandsons Scott Salter, Brad and Devin Salter, Rex Lewis, granddaughter Whitney Williams, great grandchildren Grant and Ty Salter, and Lacy and Grace Salter. In accordance with Mom's wishes, her ashes will be interred in the family plot in Bogata, Texas. In lieu of flowers, donations to a charity benefiting disabled veterans would be appreciated.
