Sabine was born in Berlin, Germany on May 24, 1939 to Irmgard and Robert Schulze. In early childhood, Sabine and her family fled to West Germany to escape the impending Russian advance. From the age of 5 until 22, she resided in Uelzen and then Braunschweig, Germany with her mother and grandmother. Sabine attended an art institute where she obtained a degree in photography and practiced as a professional portrait photographer. In 1963, she immigrated to the United States and married Sylvan Becker (Jack) where they welcomed two children, Mark in 1965 and Stefanie in 1967. After her husband’s retirement, the family moved to Florida for one year then decided to settle in Jack’s hometown of New Glarus, WI.
In search for higher education for the children, the family moved to Austin, TX in 1978 where Sabine spent the remainder of her life. Both Mark and Stefanie attended the University of Texas in Austin, allowing them to reside at home with their parents.
In 1985, Sabine’s husband succumbed to cancer. She remained integrally involved in her children’s lives, supporting their academic and musical endeavors. In 1990, Sabine married Gunter Osbahr, a German born(TI) engineer, and created a new, blended family.
Sabine was a fabulous chef, her German Roladen dish serving as the main course for many family gatherings. She fed an army of hungry friends and family with her savory potato salad most weekends at their cabin on Lake Travis. Sabine learned to snow ski and enjoyed many ski trips in Colorado. Boating and sailing on Lake Travis were her summer pleasures. She treasured her home in Balcones for its view and the wide assortment of flowers that adorned her backyard. Sabine was an avid dog lover and thoroughly enjoyed the attention of her favorite poodle. Above all, Sabine cherished her family and friends, nurturing these relationships throughout her life.
Sabine is survived by her husband, Gunter Osbahr of Austin, TX; her two children: Dr. Mark O. Becker of The Woodlands, TX (wife Scarlett) and Stefanie Federlin of Austin, TX (husband Peter and daughters Jade and Sabina); sister, Beate Schulze of Bielefeld, Germany; stepson, John C. Becker of Chicago, IL (wife Gail); stepson, Jeffery Osbahr of Shelburne, VT (wife Lisa, son Collin and daughter Elise); stepdaughter, Melissa Ham of Litchfield, MN (daughters Courtney and Sophia, son James); as well as numerous nieces and extended family in Germany.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Sylvan J. Becker, parents, Irmgard and Robert Schulze, and brother Jochen Schulze.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, January 21, 2023 at 1 PM at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home at 5416 Parkcrest Drive, Austin, TX 78731.
