Sheila Marilyn Whitworth, 84, passed away peacefully on Memorial Day, May 31, 2021. Marilyn was born on July 21, 1936 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to Robert and Lottie Nowlin, and she graduated from John Marshall High School in Oklahoma City in 1955. She also attended Hill’s Business University.
Marilyn met George Whitworth at a YWCA Dance in May of 1959, and the two quickly became engaged. They married on September 5, 1959 and lived the rest of their days in Austin, Texas, sharing over 61 years together as husband and wife. Marilyn and George always had music playing in their home, and their song was “Kansas City”.
Together, Marilyn and George discovered the truths taught by Jesus of Nazareth and made a life-long commitment to follow Him as their Savior. They were baptized together at Hillcrest Baptist Church in Austin, where they served faithfully for the rest of their active lives. Marilyn especially enjoyed participating in Bible study, fellowship meals, and serving in the Mothers’ Day Out program.
Marilyn worked on the office staff of Lanier Baptist Church and at Blue Cross Blue Shield. However, her main focus in life was always as a homemaker and caretaker of her family. The day she married George, she also became “Mom” to George’s two preschool daughters, Debbie and Jill, and Marilyn thrived in making meals, sewing clothes, and caring for her new family. Caretaker was always Marilyn’s greatest trait—for George, their three daughters, sons-in-law, grandchildren and extended family members.
Marilyn is preceded in death by George, the love of her life, who passed away January 29, 2021 due to COVID-related illness. She is also preceded in death by her parents and her eldest daughter, Debbie Borden. She leaves behind to cherish her memory: two daughters, Jill Brown and her husband Odell, and Valerie Loughlin and her husband Joe; son-in-law Michael Borden; brother, Ralph Nowlin; seven grandchildren: Les Vasterling and his wife Kimberely, Samantha Vasterling, Justin Borden and his wife Eileen, Ashley Foster and her husband Jeff, Bri Loughlin, Worth Loughlin and his wife Whitney, and Glenna Loughlin; and four great-grandchildren—Seth, Brooklyn, Brody, and Felicia.
Marilyn’s family wishes to thank all of her care givers, especially the staff and nurses at Park Place Nursing Home in Belton, Texas. Memorial gifts and contributions may be made to one’s charity of choice.
