Sonja Carrico's long and courageous battle with breast cancer has ended and she has been called home at the age of 68. Sonja asked that we celebrate her life with an uplifting Memorial Service to be conducted at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral home, located at 3125 North Lamar in Austin Texas on Wednesday July 15th at 1:00 p.m. Sonja had a fervent passion for living life to its fullest. She was an accomplished painter and would light-up when she spoke of the great Impressionist's Vincent Van Gogh and Monet. She adored traveling to Paris and embraced its rich and artistic culture. Sonja, her sister Shelby "Jean" Hiebel and Mother Ethel Fails had a very humble upbringing and difficult time, when at the age of 6, her father, Jim Fails, passed away. She was driven to overcome this adversity and became passionate about becoming a registered nurse. She began her career caring for children with Leukemia for many years, often bringing them home to visit her children to make them feel part of the family. She then spent many years taking care of premature babies. Sonja finished her long nursing career at Girling Health Care. Sonja wanted to take the opportunity to thank all the patients she had the privilege of helping over the years and her many friends at the Girling Health Care family, especially, the kindness and close friendship of Mark and Bette Girling. Those who were blessed to be a friend of Sonja knew of her love for her children Pam Barton, James and Cliff Luckey. She was known to go to great lengths to spoil her grandchildren and great grandchildren, Mary VanCleave, Jennifer Hersey, Jana Jeanes, Miranda Luckey, Kyle Longoria, Niki, Michele, Mathew, Marie, Mariah, Ethan, Charlotte, Mitchell, Lilly, Nelson, Kristi McCarty, Jacob Luckey, her nephew Randy Hiebel, Niece Tammy Jones and Daughter-in-laws Janet Luckey and Kelli Luckey. Words simply can't express the families' deep love and gratitude toward the following individuals: Rose and Charlie Hill, Roberto, Alberto and Josh Longoria, William and Dee Luckey, Harold Luckey, Cliffy Hill, Erin Jamar, Carrie Jamar, Katie, Michaelson, Garrett Jones, Diane Rath, Kathy Maxey, George Ledbetter and Dr. and Mrs. F.C. Smith, Lighthouse hospice and Dr. Charles Griffin. A special thank you from all of Sonja's family to the many friends and family who have made such a beautiful difference in her life.
