Stephen Lee McDonald, former professor and chairman of the Department of Economics, the University of Texas at Austin, died Sunday, February 12, 2006, at age 81. Born August 8, 1924, in Arkadelphia, Arkansas to Claud Bethel and Ruth Gresham McDonald, he graduated from Minden High School, Minden, Louisiana, and received his B.A. degree from Louisiana Tech University. After serving in the United States Navy from 1943-46, he earned his Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin in 1951. After teaching at UT and Louisiana State University, he returned to UT in 1961 as a professor of economics. He served as chairman of the Department of Economics from 1972-76, 1978-79, and 1988-89, and in 1982 received the Presidents Associates Award for Excellence in the Teaching of Economics. Stephen was a distinguished scholar in the field of natural resources economics, specializing in oil and gas production, and also in the field of monetary economics. He published many articles and books, in which he was able to blend theory into practice and influence policymakers. As a result of his national reputation, he earned the distinction of being appointed the Jack S. Josey Professor of Energy Studies, 1984-86. He also consulted for the Brookings Institution, the National Science Foundation and the State of Texas Energy Policy Committee to advise Governor Ann Richards, before retiring from the University of Texas in 1994 as the Addison Baker Duncan Centennial Professor Emeritus of Economics. In retirement he enjoyed reading, writing his memoirs, gardening, visiting with his children and grandchildren, and spending summers in Estes Park, Colorado, with his wife, Betty. He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Elizabeth Brewer McDonald; two daughters, Martha Elizabeth Worchel and Kathryn Ann McGlothlin; two grandchildren, Jenna Worchel Holmes and Michael Louis Worchel, all of Austin; and a sister, Martha McCardell of Stamford, Connecticut. Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, February 17, 2006 at Tarrytown Methodist Church, 2601 Exposition Blvd, Austin, in the Chapel. Burial will follow at Austin Memorial Park.
