Steve Garcia Cantu, age 68, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and cherished friend passed away on Sunday, February 13, 2011. Steve was born in Austin, on Thursday, October 29, 1942. He was well known for his commitment and dedicated civil service of 48 years. Steve had recently retired from the Internal Revenue Service in Austin as an Information Technology Specialist. He was a former United States Marine of four years and also served and retired with twenty years as a Master Sergeant in the Air Force Reserves at Bergstrom Air Force Base working with the 924th Fighter Wing. During his daughter’s elementary schooling, Steve was an active member of the PTA and the Campus Advisory Committee at Galindo Elementary. Steve enjoyed volunteering in school activities and working with the children and teachers.
Steve was preceded in death by his father, Andres Cantu; mother, Lydia Cantu; and brother, Andrew Cantu, Jr.
He is survived by his wife, Maricela Macias Cantu; daughter, Stephanie Cantu; son, Stephen Cantu and wife Lisa Cantu, son, John Paul Cantu; sister, Mary Cantu Cutting and husband Pete Cutting; his grandchildren, Cameron Cantu, Cale Cantu, Brock Cantu and Haley Cantu.
The Cantu family extends a special thanks to Texas Oncology staff; especially, Dr. Laurence Tokaz and Pam Garza, Nursing Practioner for their true dedication and care. We would also like to thank Steve and Maricela’s managers, Adolfo Laurell, III and Robert Velasquez for their support and understanding in this difficult time.
Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be held at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, February 16, 2011 at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 2620 South Congress Avenue. Mass of the Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am on Thursday, February 17, 2011 at St. Ignatius Catholic Church with Reverend Michael Couhig, C.S.C. officiating. Interment will follow at Assumption Cemetery.
