Dorothy Sue Gibson Wright of Austin, Texas, precious mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, celebrated her 70th birthday in Heaven on February 16, 2016. Born in Gulf Port, MS on February 16, 1946, she was the daughter of the late Edith Jennings Gibson and O.L. “Gib” Gibson. She was preceded in death by her mother, father, brother, Harry and sister, Sara Catherine.
A 1964 graduate of Westbury H.S. in Houston, this beauty majored in English at Baylor University and graduated in 1969. Baylor is where she met and married her first husband, Mike Patton, the father of her beloved three daughters Wendy, Stacy, and Kristen. Her life was centered on her children and eventually her grandchildren, which would lead her to Austin to be near them. A strong follower of Christ, Sue found love and friendship with her church family at Hill Country Bible Church, and later Midtown Austin where she served in many ministries including helping to plant new churches to share her light and love for God. All who have had the blessing of knowing her know that her true passion was serving – whether God, her church, her family, her friends, or total strangers. Her example of enduring faith and strength and grace through all circumstances has inspired those closest to her and countless others. She has been a mighty warrior for God on this earth, and her servant heart has beautifully represented His love. Everywhere she went she was an encouragement and inspiration.
With the birth of her first grandchild, Sue chose her nickname “Muzzy” and for the last 24 years has been Muzzy to one and all. Her favorite pastime was her grandchildren, and she kept up with every game, performance, and life event. She was their greatest cheerleader, blessed to daily be part of their lives and they were in-turn exponentially blessed to have her example to live by.
She was an unfailing friend- always sending a card, making a call, or diligently praying for her loved ones. All of us who knew her were comforted by her steadfast remembrance and celebration of the big and little life events.
Muzzy is survived by her dear lifelong friend and now fiancé Doug Riden of San Antonio; sister, Nanette Gibson of Austin; daughters Wendy Patton Glover and her husband Brad of Austin, Stacy Patton-Payne and her husband Gary of Midland, and Kristen Patton and her husband Steve Goldsmith of Austin; her adored grandchildren Josh Glover, Laurel Glover, Hannah Payne, Julianne Glover, Brayden Payne, Brooke Payne, Clayton Goldsmith, Lillian Goldsmith, Emerson Goldsmith, Easton Payne, and newest edition Harriet Goldsmith.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from two o’clock in the afternoon until five o’clock in the evening, Sunday, the 21st of February 2016 at Cook-Walden Funeral Home; 6100 N. Lamar Blvd. Austin TX 78752.
