OBITUARY

S.W. "Si" Holt

February 1, 1925October 15, 2011

Silas Wayne “Si” Holt passed away on Saturday, October 15, 2011, at his home in Round Rock, TX due to complications from stomach cancer. His wife, Emma, his son, Si Jr., and his daughter, Linda, were at his side. Born in Haslam, TX on Feb. 1, 1925, he grew up in Lufkin and was a graduate of Lufkin High School. He joined the Army Air Force in May 1943 and married his high school sweetheart, Emma Ruth Law, on Nov. 28, 1943. He served during WWII as an airplane mechanic at bases in Wichita Falls and Galveston, TX, and Kansas City and Leavenworth, KS. In 1946, he began a long career with Texas Power & Light, and he moved his family to Dallas where he worked closely with the rural electric cooperatives. He joined TP&L’s Public Service Dept. in 1968, and in 1976 was promoted to Vice President of Texas Utilities Services, Inc. where he served as Director of State and Governmental Affairs in Austin. Si and Emma moved their home base to Round Rock, TX in 1976 and Si retired from TXU in 1987. Prior to his “retirement”, Si and Emma had planted a pecan orchard in San Saba, TX which they worked and enjoyed until they sold it in 1996. Si had an extraordinary gift for making people laugh. He was a lover of music, hunting, learning how things work and building them, education, reading, and sitting in his front porch swing. He lived a full life defined by hard work and integrity. And above all, he loved and cared for his beloved wife of 67 years. He is survived by Emma, Si Jr., and Linda; his sister, Elsie Redd, of Tyler; his brothers, David Holt, of Alto and Robert Holt, of Ingram; brothers and sisters-in-law, Flora Holt, Sylvia Holt, Annon Card, and Vernon Redd; numerous nieces and nephews; and, a host of loving friends and neighbors. There will be a visitation for Si on Tuesday, October 18, 2011 from 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm at Cook-Walden Chapel of the Hills Funeral Home located at 9700 Anderson Mill Road, Austin, Texas 78750. The Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, October 19, 2011 at 1:00 pm at Cook-Walden Chapel of the Hills Funeral Home. Linda -

This has been quite a year for you. I'm so glad we've been able to talk several times and hope you're doing OK. I have such fond memories of your dad, remembering all the times I spent at your house when we were growing up. My fondest - his whistling. I smile when I think about it. I hope your mom is managing. I know it's a difficult time for her, too, and how much your help means to her.

Much love,
Pam

Dearest Emma,

Please know Maurice and I grieve deeply for you and Linda and "little" Si. Si was such a GOOD man and one of the best neighbors ever. We grieve deeply for ourselves, because we miss knowing he's down there in "God's Country" (central Texas, that is) and knowing the world has lost such a special person.

The Thanksgiving card was addressed and sealed while we were still in Colorado because I knew we'd be frantic when we got back to Dallas and this big move. I decided to go ahead and send it, because life goes on, and we wanted you to know that one of the things we're thankful for is Si's life - and the fact that we had a chance to know him and have you as neighbors.

We love you,
Grayce

Dear Em,

Si was like a big brother to me, literally, because I had lost my 2 older brothers before coming to Austin. He corrected my mistakes and praised me when I got it right. I so appreciated the relationship. Yvonne and I really enjoyed the social time that we were together with you and Si. You are a part of every Christmas that we have because we still use your pecan bags for our Christmas stockings.

We don't travel much these days, but we will certainly come see you if we are anywhere close to your home. In my mind, Si will always be a part of the legacy of the "good" old TP&L.

Blessings,
Bob & Yvonne

Life is a journey of sweetness and sorrow,
Of yesterday's memories and hopes for tomorrow,
Of pathways we choose and detours we face
With patience and humor, courage and grace,
Of joys that we've shared and of people we've met
Who have touched us in ways we will never forget.

As you go through this time of sadness, may you know in your heart how very much others care.

Love,
Mossy and T.V.

Dear Emma,

Thank you for your recent note regarding Si's passing. Hub talked of you both often down through the years.
I hope Si did not have too much suffering.

God bless you and yours,

Dear Emma,

I was glad to hear from you but so sad to learn of Si's passing. You have my deepest sympathy for I know how rough it's been for you. Even with all the years of memories, it still hurts. Time does help a little. Your daughter and son are a blessing and will help you.

As you said, I bet Si and George are discussing Philmont.

Take care of yourself, Emma, and do let's keep in touch.

Love,
Hilda

Emma,

I don't know how to tell you how sorry I was to get your letter. Dorothy and I really enjoyed all the great times we had together.

Si and I had a great relationship, we not only worked well together, but we enjoyed out of the office time as well. Si and I enjoyed Philmont and our trips.

Lewis Austin and Si had a special relationship - when Lewis decided we would give up on the PUC fight, he had me go tell Si. He knew Si might change his mind.

Si was one of the good ones and will be missed.

Love,
Bob
