Together with Manny, she lived in the Bronx; in Ardsley, New York; and in Miami, Florida before moving to Austin in 1986.
Sylvia worked as a bookkeeper and business manager at many different businesses and was an indispensable partner to Manny. In both work and play Sylvia had inexhaustible energy. For many years after putting in a full day's work for a retail merchant in Miami she would spend evenings helping Manny with the accounting details of his small industrial diamond tool business.
Sylvia loved golf which she started playing in her thirties and which she continued to play until age 89 at the Lost Creek Country Club. She and Manny regularly attended theater, symphony, opera and many cultural events throughout their lives. Sylvia was an early and very enthusiastic member of Learning for Adult Mature People (LAMP) at the University of Texas and served for many years as the chair of the history committee. She was known for bringing many talented speakers to LAMP.
Sylvia and Manny were life-long world travelers beginning in the 1950's and continuing until they were in their late 80's. Their innumerable trips included all seven continents including both the Arctic and the Antarctic in one year alone. They brought back many wonderful pictures, endless stories and beautiful artifacts.
Sylvia is survived by her daughter, Beth Marcus, of Washington, D.C.; her son, Dr. Howard Marcus and his wife, Margaret of Austin; three grandchildren - Sarah Marcus Burke, David Marcus and Caroline Marcus Wangler; and six great grandchildren.
The burial is scheduled for January 5, 2012, at Maimonides Cemetery in Elmont, New York.
Memorials may be made to Jewish War Veterans, 1811 R Street N.W., Washington, DC 20009.
