Teresa Fernandez, 93, was a devout Catholic born in Crystal City, Texas, and lived most of her life in San Antonio. Her birthday, May 10th, would usually be Mother' Day so it was always a big celebration! Her daughter Tina would always ask mariachis to sing Las Mananitas when her children took her out to celebrate at our favorite restaurant Mi Tierra in San Antonio. She loved to eat bananas before breakfast (her favorite meal), and eggs with plant based bacon. She had a sweet tooth and loved eating pumpkin empanadas with her breakfast coffee. The priests would always ask her to sing in church because she had a beautiful voice. Spanish music was a big part of her life. She could put on her lipstick perfectly without a mirror and she made perfectly round flour tortillas from scratch! My mother was bilingual but preferred her native language Spanish. Sometime she would forget that her grandchildren and great grandchildren didn't speak Spanish and she would be trying to carry on a conversation with them in Spanish. They would loving say "English grandma English." My mother and my sister Tina rest side by side in eternal peace.
