

Thelma graduated from Livingston High School in 1937 and she went to Massey Business School in Houston. Her first job was at United Gas Company in Livingston. Later she moved to Austin to work for Judge Ernest Coker and there she met her husband Herbert Metzger. They were married in 1942. After the war they returned to Austin where she and her husband lived for 60 years. She worked at the State Department of Agriculture for 30 years and retired in 1980.
Thelma and Herbert loved to travel around the U.S.; they always had a dog and loved dog shows. She was an avid supporter of University of Texas Athletics, especially baseball and football games. They also followed the State Basketball tournaments for 30 years. Thelma was also a member of the First English Lutheran Church since 1943.
Thelma was predeceased by her parents Charlie and Bessie Smith; her husband of 62 years Herbert Metzger; five brothers, Beamon, Jamie, Ed, J.C. and Carter.
Thelma is survived by her nephews Beamon Smith (Martha), Bid Smith (Grace), James Edward (Joy), nieces; Connie Smith and Kathy Reid (John) all of Livingston, Texas.
Graveside service will be conducted at one o’clock in the afternoon on Thursday, the 11th of June 2015, at Oakwood Cemetery Annex, 1601 Navasota St, Austin, Texas 78702, under the direction of Cook-Walden Funeral Home.
