Austin lost one of its own. On November 12, 2024, Thomas "Tom" Walling Cummins passed away at the age of 69 after a brief battle with rare cancer. He faced his terminal diagnosis with courage and peace, comforted by his faith in God’s love.
A fifth-generation Austinite, Tom was deeply devoted to his family, especially his wife of 45 years, Linda, and their daughters Caroline and Katie. He adored them, and they were his life. He was known for his quick wit, humor, and kind, noble heart.
Tom was born on June 7, 1955, to Betty Ann Bradfield and Donald Hugh Cummins. He was proud of the longstanding role his family played in Austin’s growth and development and decided to follow in the family’s footsteps. Tom attended Southern Methodist University, pledged Phi Gamma Delta and earned a BBA in 1977. He married his wife, Linda, on November 3, 1979, after meeting at SMU and began their lives together in Austin. He was a proud member of the Real Estate Appraisal Institute (MAI) and became a college professor, providing mentorship to others looking to forge their real estate careers.
While loyal to SMU, Tom was a lifelong Longhorn fan and enjoyed attending games with Linda and their daughters. Tom was a member of Leadership Austin, the Admiral's Club, the Bachelor's Club, Westwood Country Club, and Headliner’s Club.
Faith was at the foundation of who he was. Tom was active member of Tarrytown United Methodist Church, led Bible studies and the Stephen Ministry. Tom was dedicated to charitable causes, particularly Foundation Communities and Helping Hand Home for Children, reflecting his generous spirit.
Tom is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Brad. He is survived by his wife, Linda; daughters Caroline and wife Caitlan; Katie and husband Tim; grandsons Robert and Christopher; and nephews Landon and Ryan.
A memorial service will be held at Tarrytown United Methodist Church on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, at 10:30 AM, with a reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Foundation Communities and Helping Hand Home for Children in Tom's honor.
