

Greg Hoffman died peacefully in his sleep unexpectedly after 66 years of life on December 2, 2016. He was born and raised in Wichita, Kansas, for 22 years. He then spent 20 years of serving in the USAF around the world. He retired in Austin, Texas, and has been a resident there for 24 years.
Greg was born in Wichita, Kansas on September 24, 1950, and graduated from Wichita West High School in 1968. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration in 1972, from Wichita State University and a Master’s degree in Human Relations from the University of Oklahoma in 1984. He has completed Squadron Officer School, Air Command and Staff College, and the Air War College.
Major Hoffman entered the Air Force in 1972, on an Air Force ROTC commission from Wichita State University and undergraduate navigator training at Mather AFB, California, in June 1972. A distinguished graduate in March 1973, he received the Husik trophy for finishing first in flying and the Daughters of America Colonist trophy for finishing second overall in a class of more than 100 students.
His first assignment in 1973, was to Shaw AFB, South Carolina, to attend the RF-4C Phantom II replacement training unit. Then he was assigned to the 15th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron, Kadena AB, Japan, from 1973 to 1975. While at Kadena, he upgraded to Instructor Weapon System Officer (IWSO) in the RF-4C.
Back at Shaw AFB in 1975, he was an IWSO in the RF-4C RTU until 1979. While there, he also served as Squadron Life Support Officer for the 33rd Tactical Reconnaissance Training Squadron and later, the 363rd Tactical Reconnaissance Wing. In 1979, he went back to the 15th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron where he was a Flight Commander until 1982, when he was transferred to Osan AB, Repubilc of Korea. There, he was the first-ever permanently assigned Operations Officer with Detachment 1, 18th Tactical Fighter Wing, responsible for the wing’s RF-4Cs and F-15s flying alert operations.
In June 1985, Major Hoffman was transferred to Headquarters, Pacific Air Forces, Hickam AFB, Hawaii, as Chief of the Tactical Reconnaissance Branch within the tactical operation directorate of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations. In 1989, he was assigned as the Inspector General with the 6168th Combat Support Squadron. From 1989 to 1990, he was the assumed duties of Base Commander at Teagu AB, Republic of Korea. His final assignment was from 1990 to 1992 in which he retired at Bergstrom AFB in Austin, Texas. In his civilian life, he worked as an Independent Contractor.
Greg was an avid sports fan of the Wichita State Shockers, Texas Longhorns, and Dallas Cowboys. He also enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family.
Greg leaves behind his wife, Yeong Jee Hoffman; and two sons, Brian and fiancé, Jamie and Thomas and wife, Diamond. He is survived by his sisters Karen McLarty and Sandra Carson. He was blessed with 3 grandchildren Hayden and Haley, from Thomas and Diamond, and Ivy, from Brian and his fiancé, Jamie.
Visitation will be held from 11:30 A.M. to 1:00 P.M., with the Funeral Service to begin at 1:00 P.M., on Saturday, December 10, 2016, at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home in Austin, Texas. Internment Service will be at 2:30 P.M., at Onion Creek Memorial Park, where Major Hoffman will be presented with military honors.
