Toppy Champion

Toppy was a Union carpenter for over 50 years. He designed and built his home and enjoyed woodworking, watching westerns, tending to his vegetable garden and flowers. He was a member of Ascension Lutheran Church in Austin.

Toppy and Johnette were high school sweethearts and were married for over 61 years. He was a proud North Austinite who lived in Alaska from 1964 to 1975 with his wife and two children helping to rebuild the state after the earthquake of 1964. Toppy was loved by many.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, WC Champion, Jr.; sister, Mary Zieger. He is survived by his wife, Johnette King Champion; daughter, Jolene Champion Hudson and husband Leon of Austin; son, Blake Champion of Austin; brother, Gilbert Champion of Gonzales; sister, Linnie Turner of Cedar Park; grandchildren Chance Hudson and Lexi Hudson.

Toppy will lie in state from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 22, 2011 at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 3125 N. Lamar Blvd.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 23, 2011 at Austin Memorial Park on Hancock Drive with Pastor Brian Peterson officiating.
