Ty Matthew Poelker, age 50, passed away at his home in Maryland on January 21, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of complexities that cannot be easily captured in words.
Born on April 7, 1974, in Decatur, Illinois, Ty was the beloved son of Peggy and Carl Poelker. Ty spent his formative years in Illinois, where he developed a love for sports, excelling in baseball and wrestling as a young man. He admired his older siblings, and cherished the bonds they shared. Ty’s compassionate nature shone through even as a child; he had a tender heart for animals and often brought home strays to care for.
Ty proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army. His service took him across the globe to Korea and later to Fort Hood (now Fort Cavazos) in Texas. After completing his military duties, Ty chose to make Texas his home for much of his life. As a veteran, Ty faced burdens of his service that followed him long after his uniform was put away.
His charm and humor were magnetic—he had a way of making everyone feel like an old friend. To those who knew him, Ty didn’t just meet strangers; he welcomed them into his world with open arms. A man with a zest for life, Ty was known for his generous hospitality and passion for bringing people together. Whether hosting gatherings filled with laughter or perfecting recipes over a grill, he delighted in creating moments that would be cherished by those around him. A talented cook with an adventurous spirit in the kitchen, Ty’s meals were as unforgettable as the joy he brought to every occasion.
Ty’s vibrant personality shone brightest when surrounded by music and sports—two passions that fueled his boundless energy. A lover of rock and roll and live performances, he found joy in sharing these experiences with friends and family. His booming laugh could light up any room, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
He is survived by his parents, Peggy and Carl Poelker; his children: Zachary Poelker, Cassidy Poelker, Bailee Poelker, and Isabella Poelker; and his grandchildren: Wren Wilson and King Stoutamire. Ty’s memory is also carried forward by his siblings: Todd Poelker (Thu Huong), Tim Poelker (Julie), Traci Eckenrod (Grant), Trent Poelker (Jennifer), along with many nieces and nephews who held a special place in his heart.
A graveside service for Ty will be held Monday, February 10, 2025 at 2:00 PM at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery, 11463 SH -195, Killeen, Texas 76542.
In remembering him, we choose to hold close the moments of joy he brought, the love he expressed in his own unique way, and the lessons learned from his life. May his memory forever echo in the hearts of those who loved him.
