My mother was from Mbioto No. 2, Etinan Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. She received an Associate Degree in Business Administration from Grant MacEwan Community College (now MacEwan University) in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. She worked as an Administrative Assistant at the College of Communication at The University of Texas at Austin. After leaving the workforce, my mother was a dedicated stay-at-home mom and homemaker. During this time, she also attended Austin Community College and studied Nutrition and Culinary Arts.
She loved spending time with family and her only daughter. We took shopping trips to Barton Creek Mall where we spent my dad’s money! We played card games, Nigerian board games, and watched movies together. One of our favorite movies to watch together was The Sound of Music. We watched it every Christmas. She loved music. Her favorite song was “Silent Night.”
She and my dad took many trips together and enjoyed traveling. They also enjoyed quiet nights at home in front of the television talking and watching movies. She cooked him dinner every night and they always sat at the kitchen table to eat together. They were very close.
She loved to cook and host my friends at our house. My favorite dishes my mom cooked were fajitas, fried rice, coconut rice, steak, and beef stew. She liked the occasional fast food meal. Her favorite was a McDonald’s Big Mac.
She had many talents. She could sing, knit, sew, and write poetry. She was very funny. She loved being active and sitting outside in the sun. She was very fashionable and loved to dress up and look nice. Her favorite color was pink.
She was an active member of the Christian Life Church in Austin, Texas. She enjoyed Sunday services and eating lunch at Red Lobster after church. She was very faithful and read the bible every night. She was very prayerful. She was also an active member of the Austin Chapter of the Akwa Ibom Association.
She is survived by her daughter, grandson Marshall, brothers, sisters, nephews, nieces, cousins, in-laws, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Mommy, our hearts are heavy with sorrow, but we will cherish your memory forever. We are grateful to God for the beautiful years we shared with you on this earth. Rest in glorious peace with God. One day, we will meet again.
