

Vera D. Miller, 98, passed away January 23, 2007 at Seton Hospital, Austin. She was born in Wynnewood, Oklahoma February 6, l908, and was a resident of Austin since 1945. She was a private duty nurse in area hospitals and doctors offices. She was Travis Countys first female Deputy Sheriff, who functioned as both nurse and matron at the County Jail. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, January 29th at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 3125 North Lamar Blvd. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 30th at Weed-Corley-Fish Chapel. Interment will follow at Capital Parks Cemetery, 14501 N. IH35 in Pflugerville. She was preceded in death by her husband, William McKinley Stricklin, her son, Jack Stricklin and her son-in-law, Ross Herring. She is survived by her half-sister, Elnora Oakes, her daughter, Bobbie Herring, her son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Artie Stricklin, nine grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren, and thirteen great-great-grandchildren. She lived her life for her children and her family and went out of her way to care for anyone who came to her for help. She was strong, independent, full of love and cared so much for others. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends. Serving as pallbearers will be her grandsons: James Herring, Rick Stricklin, Ron Stricklin, and Scott Stricklin; great-grandsons: Heath Herring and Hunter Herring.
