Vernon Lee Worrell
April 15, 1929 – January 11, 2021
It is with great sadness that the family of Vernon Lee Worrell announce Vernon’s passing. Vernon was born on April 15, 1929 in Cranfills Gap, Texas to Clyde Worrell and Aggie Fields. Vernon passed away on Monday, January 11, 2021 in Austin, Texas at the age of 91. Vernon was dearly loved by everyone he knew.
At an early age, Vernon became the backbone of his family, supporting his parents and siblings when times were tough during The Great Depression. His family moved to Oak Hill in the early 1940’s where he met the love of his life, Rosie Marx. Vernon and Rosie were married on August 27, 1954. He worked for Travis County, International Harvester and eventually found his calling as an auto mechanic at Capitol Chevrolet, where he worked for nearly 40 years before retiring.
Vernon had a lifelong passion for Old Time Texas Style Fiddling Music and was an incredible guitar player. He never took a music lesson and played the guitar completely by ear. For years, he enjoyed traveling around Texas with his family playing for fiddlers in Fiddle Contests. He especially enjoyed playing in jam sessions and would play for hours, sometimes being the last one to go home. Over the past 20 years, he played with his good friends in the “Tom and Vernon Band”, playing at assistant living facilities in Austin so that others could enjoy listening to their music. He also enjoyed going to Pearl, Texas playing at the monthly Pearl Bluegrass Jam.
Vernon loved eating country cooking, especially fried catfish. He loved his dogs and would take them on daily four-wheeler rides around the pasture.
Vernon was a kind-hearted, patient and hard-working man with great family values. He will be greatly missed by all that knew him. Vernon is survived by his two children, Keith Worrell, Sandy (Worrell) Jones and her husband Brian of Austin; his sister Irelene (Worrell) Turner and her husband Charles of Georgetown; two brothers Roland Worrell of Dripping Springs, Larry Worrell and his wife Connie of Fort Worth; three grandchildren Bobby Jones, Courtney (Worrell) Merchant and her husband Donald, and Amy Jones; one great-granddaughter, Madison Merchant of Austin.
Vernon is preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Aggie Worrell, and wife Rosie Worrell.

Vern was an incredible man. He showed great kindness to everyone, and always had such a positive attitude that it just rubbed off on you. He was a great guitar player and I will miss playing the fiddle with him. My deepest sympathies to his family.
