She grew up on a farm in central Illinois, lived in a house without electricity, and went to a one room school. She was a soldier’s wife, a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, artist, piano player, cake decorator, seamstress.
She married Hubert L Landis in 1954 in the First Christian Church in Mason City, Illinois where they were both members. At 27 she had 3 children ages 1-7 which she took care of alone while her husband was in Vietnam for 18 months. One of my fondest memories was at Christmas around the time I was 7, I received a suitcase full of handmade Barbie clothes from Santa. She made those clothes after she put her kids to bed at night.
One of the most remarkable things my parents did was adopt our brother, Daniel, from an orphanage in Tehran, Iran when we lived there in 1972. Adopting my brother was the single most selfless thing they ever did. Viola passed July 20, 2020 at Sodalis Memory Care Bluebonnet unit in Buda, Texas. She had Alzheimer’s disease, she had cared for my father before he passed away who also had Alzheimer’s disease.
She leaves behind her children: Debra (Landis) and Philip Wilson; David and Lynn (Powell) Landis; Diana (Landis) and Alan Wullschleger; Daniel and Julie (Summersell) Landis. Also grandchildren: Michael Landis, Mitchell Landis, Chrissy (Wilson) Foster, Colin Wilson, Kevin Black, Richard Wullschleger, Robin Wullschleger, AJ Wullschleger, Jacob Landis, Austin Landis; and 3 great grandchildren. She will be missed.
