Virginia Bloomquist Martin passed away Wednesday, February 11, 2009 at the age of 94. Virginia was born on February 18, 1914, the youngest daughter of Simon and Julia Blomquist, a Swedish farming family who settled in the Berry's Creek community, north of Georgetown, in the 1890's. One of our favorite stories is about how she learned to roller skate on the road that ran in front of their home. That road is now called 1-35. After graduating from Georgetown High School, Virginia attended Nixon-Clay Business School in Austin. She eventually worked at the Travis County Courthouse where she met her future husband, O.T. Martin, Jr. Together, they were a dynamic duo. Virginia was a huge supporter of O.T during the many years that he served as Travis County District Clerk. Virginia and O.T. were devout members of the Methodist Church, first attending Ward Memorial Methodist Church and, later, Saint John's United Methodist Church. They were also active members of the Austin Civitan Club and tireless volunteers at the Travis State School. They enjoyed bowling and were members of the Austin Gem and Mineral Society. Virginia also enjoyed her own hobbies painting landscapes and studying antiques through her membership in the Questers Club. They both enjoyed traveling and made many trips together across the U.S. and to Mexico. Because of Virginia, we have a wealth of memories built from celebrations in her home - the 4th of July with homemade peach ice cream, countless Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners for 15 or more, and October birthday celebrations. Virginia is predeceased by her husband, her parents, and her siblings, Adelia Anderson, Olga Blomquist, F.T. (Slim) Bloomquist, Pauline Reese, and Melcher Blomquist. She is survived by her nieces and nephews, Vonda Bloomquist and John Bloomquist and wife, Anne (Austin), Julie Salsman and husband, Charles (New Braunsfels), Wesley Johnson and wife, Valerie (Arlington), Matthew Johnson and wife, Alisa (Azle) and many grand nieces and nephews. Virginia is also survived by O.T.'s nephew, Tom Martin Virginia was a strong woman who loved her family. She will be missed by all of us. Visitation will be held from 4:00-6:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 14th at Weed¬-Corley-Fish Funeral Home on North Lamar. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 15th at Capital Memorial Park in Pflugerville with Reverend Pat Thomas officiating. The family would like to recognize and thank Virginia's wonderful caregivers, Maria Cruz, Maria Jimenez, and her daughter Maria, who have provided loving support for the past few years and extra special care during the last few weeks. We would also like to thank the staff of Brighton Gardens for all that they have done. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in her name to Saint John's United Methodist Church or Hospice Austin.
