W. E. (Bob) Shaver passed from this life on July 11, 2013. Born April 8, 1922, to Calvin and Myrtie Shaver, he was predeceased by his parents and brothers William and Homer. He is survived by Iva Joy, wife of 66 years; sons Philip and wife Kathleen, Timothy, and Bradley and wife Sherrie; grandchildren Melanie and Matthew; brothers George and Merrill; and sisters Kathryn, Patsy and Francis.
Born to humble beginnings in a log cabin in Northeast Texas, he worked on the family farm and in the Civilian Conservation Corps to help his family survive the great depression. He served in the U. S. Coast Guard during WWII, subsequently worked as a fireman at Red River Arsenal, and finalized his working career as a private business owner. Throughout his life he displayed a special rapport with infants. This talent was used to provide relief to weary parents with ill children through his participation in Brackenridge Hospital’s Rocking Papas program. However, his greatest pleasure was being a grandfather and the relationship he had with his grandchildren.
The family expresses its gratitude to the Windsor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center management and staff for their care and attention during his most difficult final days, to Dr. Michael Romaine for his years of caring medical attention, to Colleen Flaherty and Hospice Austin for their unique and special knowledge of the needs of terminally ill patients and their families, and to Kent Olson for his steadfast support.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Dell Children’s Hospital or the Baptist Children’s Home in Round Rock, Texas.
Funeral arrangements are through Cook-Walden Funeral Home at 6100 N. Lamar Blvd., Austin, Texas. Visitation is scheduled for 11:00 a.m., with Funeral Service to follow at 12:00 p.m. Monday, July 15, 2013, at Great Hills Baptist Church, 10500 Jollyville Road, Austin, Texas.
