On Thursday, February 23rd, 2006 Walter Raymond Cogburn went home to be with the Lord. Born in the piney woods of east Texas, in the tiny town of Timpson, on September 8, 1919, he leaves a legacy of hearty Texans who generously served their church and community, picked cotton and scraped the rich Texas soil for their livelihood. A patriotic man who was proud to serve this country, Ray enlisted in the Air Force in 1941 and retired a Master Sergeant in 1961. During that time, Ray joined Jefferson Standard Life Insurance Company. He served as Agency Supervisor and Manager, growing his business in several cities before settling his family in Austin in 1967. A successful businessman, Ray was a charter member of the Jefferson Standard Hall of Fame and earned a lifetime membership in the Texas Leadership Round Table, as well as many years qualifying for the Million Dollar Round Table and the National Quality Award. Ray liked to say, Ive done pretty good for an old country boy. He cherished the relationships he developed with his clients and made many lasting friendships over his 50 years in business. Married 44 years, until her death, Ray and his wife, Roberta, were members of the Austin Country Club for years where they enjoyed golf, dancing and laughing with their friends. They passed on a love of those things to their children. Ray is preceded in death by his first wife, Blanche Jewel Dillon Cogburn, his second wife, Roberta Mae Zuccaro Cogburn, his son Ronald Wayne Cogburn, one brother and three sisters. He leaves behind a son, David Michael Cogburn and his wife, Pam of Garland, Texas, daughter, Stacey Leigh Cogburn Becker, her husband, Chip and their children, Chase and Kendall Becker, of Lakeway, Texas, daughter Raygan Sue Cogburn, of Seattle, Washington, his granddaughter, Melanie Peel and his beloved dog and best friend, Bosco. The family extends our heartfelt appreciation and gratitude to Geneva Hibbs whose loyalty and loving kindness supported Ray for these last ten years. Funeral Services will be held at Weed Corley-Fish Funeral Home at 3125 North Lamar in Austin, Texas on Monday, February 27 at 11am. Visitation will be Sunday, February 26 from 5-7pm. A private graveside service will be held at Ft..Sam Houston in San Antonio. "I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life. John 5:24
