September 6, 1921 - February 21, 2015
Walter passed away peacefully at age 93 after fighting an infection for two weeks. The ever present twinkle in his eye and mischievous grin dimmed.
Walter was born to Walter Albert and Harriet Lucretia (Eubanks) in Steeleville, Illinois where he lived until he enlisted in the Army at age 18.
Walter met the love of his life, Margaret “Gwen” Durstine while they were both stationed in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and they married in 1944. Together they raised their family as they traveled the world.
An Army Air Corps/Air Force World War II and Viet Nam veteran, Lt. Colonel Fiene retired from the USAF in 1971 with many decorations, including the Bronze Star. Walter enjoyed the outdoors and spent much of his free time at the skeet range, golfing, hunting and camping. Walter was also a Freemason and a member of the VFW and the American Legion.
Walt enjoyed people. He was well liked and respected by a diverse group of people, especially those serving under his command. Considered a character by many, he loved to sit at the local bar and share a good joke and his thoughts on current events.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Paul, his sister Margaret (Riley), his wife Gwen, and his oldest son Robert. He is survived by his brother William, his children and their spouses Mike (Judy Avery), Karen (Keith Hutchison), Patti, Linda (Charlie Bunker), Judy, and Susan; grandchildren Chris, Tim, Brent, Cecily, Kevin, Kirtus, Kaleb, Kyle, Hilary, Jason, Jenni, Nathan, Noah, Sam and Ben; and 13 great-grand children.
The family would like to express gratitude to his grandson Noah who helped Walter stay at home for more than two years after Gwen passed away, and to the staff at Spanish Trails Assisted Living in Horseshoe Bay, Texas where Walter enjoyed living since April 2014.
A celebration of his life will be held April 18 in Steeleville which remained his permanent address during his military career. For those who so desire, memorial contributions to American Legion Post #480 at 303 S Chester St, Steeleville, Il 62288 will be appreciated.
