Walter Frank Lenoir, III, was born in Houston, Texas to Walter Frank Lenoir, Jr. and Lucy West Lenoir. He passed on March 30, 2024. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Gloria Cisneros Lenoir; by his sister JoEllen Lenoir Blunk, her husband David Blunk, and his niece Lenoir Blunk Reynolds; by his oldest daughter Lucy Gloria Lenoir and her husband David Flores, and David’s two daughters Jazmin and Emily Flores; by his next daughter Katherine Lenoir Benavides and her husband Erasmo Benavides, and their daughter Penelope Rose and son Isaac Ezra; by his son Walter Frank Lenoir, IV, and his wife Marielle Lenoir; and his cousins Sam Dodson, Bill Dodson, Frank Dodson, and their respective families.
Walter attended Lamar High School in Houston, Texas and was an Eagle Scout. He attended Austin College in Sherman, Texas, where he earned a B.S. and M.S. in physics and mathematics. He also studied art and photography at The University of Texas in Austin.
Walter was passionate about photography and photo printing. He was a freelance photographer and shot more than 400,000 images from his travels to Mexico, Europe, Africa, Canada, Central America, the Caribbean, and throughout the United States. He taught photography classes at his first business, The Darkroom, and other locations including University of Texas. He also owned and ran Holleman Photo Lab in Austin for over a decade. He received several photography-related awards, including a 1993 award for Art in Public Places.
Walter’s other career was teaching. He taught mathematics at Johnston High School, and physics, math, and computer science courses at Travis High School. He was a highly dedicated educator, beloved by his students for his wit and passion, and his ability to teach difficult subjects for all to understand.
The Lenoir family would like to thank Walter’s wonderful caregivers, who treated him with love and provided him with great care these last several years. Walter got excellent care from Nurse Knoel Babin, Ivry Newsome, Sylvia Diaz at her personal care home, then the Padolinas at Accession Estates ALH, Marie, Dominga, Maritel, Helen, and many other loving caregivers. Hospice Austin Nurse Jacque Shroyer and many other persons were a great help. Dr. Manish Víctor Patel was an extraordinary surgeon. With their help, Walter was able to stay in a home environment until the end.
For those who would like to join in remembering Walter, visitation time will occur on Thursday, April 4, 2024, from 4 to 7 pm at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral home located at 5416 Parkcrest Drive in Austin, Texas. The funeral service shall be at the same location on Friday, April 5, 2024, at 2:00 pm, followed by burial and reception.
