Wayne was born in Temple, TX on June 1, 1948. He graduated from Temple High School and received his Masters in Archaeology from the University of Oklahoma. Wayne loved studying and working in archaeology. He worked for TxDOT for many years, before transferring to an office job with the Texas Natural Resources Conservation Commission and then retiring in 2002.
Wayne found true happiness in 1985 when he met his wife, Nelly Young. Wayne & Nelly were the perfect complements to one another, and they enjoyed 30 years of a blessed marriage. After retirement, Wayne spent his time travelling the world with Nelly. He was passionate about photography, and he especially enjoyed photographing wildlife and nature. He also loved to write about his travels and experiences. Aside from his love for his wife and family, Wayne was most passionate about fishing. He loved to fly fish from his kayak in the bay or wading a stream in Colorado. He could never get enough of it. His fishing companions, Bob Reese, Ken Holmes, Mike Murphy, and Adam Young, have many memories to treasure. Wayne could best be described as a soft-spoken, kind hearted & adventurous nature lover with a sense of humor that could have you laughing for hours. He was easy to love, hard to forget, and will forever be missed.
Wayne is survived by his wife Nelly & stepson Paul Severin; his son Adam Young & daughter-in-law Kimberly Young; & his daughter Jennifer Stevenson & son-in-law Greg Stevenson. Wayne had 4 grandchildren that he loved dearly: Ethan Young, Addison Young, Cooper Werchan, & Jake Werchan.
Wayne’s celebration of life service will be held at Cook-Walden Funeral Home Saturday, August 6 at 11am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Environmental Defense Fund in Wayne’s honor, or another nature conservancy organization of your choice.
