July 22, 1946 to September 27, 2020
Weilian Lang was born to Zhengben Lang and Xingzhen Bao in the Summer of 1946 in Shanghai, China. Weilian was the second oldest of six children, four sisters, Weibao, Weiming, Weiwei, and Weique, and brother Weian. Weilian is survived by all five siblings and each of their spouses, who all live in China, except one sister in Washington, D.C. In 1968 Weilian graduated from the East China University of Chemical Technology with a degree in Pharmaceutical chemistry and went to work for Xi’an Pharmaceutical. A few years later friends introduced Weilian and Fuhua “Flora” Gui, an architect who was teaching at the Xi’an Institute of Technology and Architecture, and in 1974 they married.
After twelve years working in Xi’an, Weilian went back to the university and earned a Masters degree in Fine chemistry. For the next eight years he was a Lecturer at Shanghai Technical College of Chemical Industry. Then in 1990 Flora and Weilian crossed the Pacific to start graduate school at Northeast Louisiana Univ., now called University of Louisiana at Monroe. Upon graduation they moved to Austin, Texas in 1994. Weilian went to work as a chemist for SACHEM, Inc., and Flora was hired as a CAD specialist by the architectural firm Page, Southerland and Page. Except for a couple year assignment in China when SACHEM built a manufacturing facility in Wuxi, China, Austin would be their home for the rest of Weilian’s life.
In 2013 Weilian was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, and despite a courageous fight with Flora constantly by his side, the cancer finally took his life. Happily during much of this time Weilian and Flora were able to enjoy activities together. Weilian enjoyed cooking dinner for Flora, especially Chinese food and many other recipes that he learned from the internet. They traveled as much as possible, even managing to visit Mexico City in early 2020. Weilian will be greatly missed by the families of his brother and sisters, those of Flora’s brother and sister, his co-workers at SACHEM, and many friends in the Austin community.
