Wendy Sue Powers Born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on February 28, 1966 Died on June 20, 2003 and resided in Spicewood, TX. (8/9/03) Wendy Sue Powers, 37, of Spicewood, TX, formerly of Bemidji, MN and Sacramento, CA, passed away Friday, June 20, 2003. She was born in Oklahoma City on February 28, 1966. Wendy moved from Oklahoma to Bemidji, MN with her mother in 1978. She was very active in junior high and high school and was successful at various academic achievements. She participated in sports as well as numerous musical and theatrical productions and was honored in newspaper articles for her youthful endeavors. She was the president of the Student Council of Northern Minnesota at the age of 15, was a much sought after singer at highschool and social events, and was Bemidji High School's February 1985 calendar girl. She moved to California after graduation to pursue an undergraduate degree in anthropology and what she called a "side career" in theatrical and musical entertainment. She participated in the Miss Sacramento Beauty Pageant, was a member of the collegiate Who's Who, National Honor Society member, and earned her Master's Degree in Public Policy at Claremont College in California. She and her former husband, Marc Richmond, moved to Austin, Texas in 1996, where she pursued her interests in environmental and social causes. She was project manager for numerous state and local agencies and real estate development in the Austin area. Wendy will be remembered not only as a beautiful woman but as a loyal and giving friend, cherished mother and daughter, and for singing the songs of Patsy Cline. She loved her family, her friends, and her son, liked good wine, clothes of the 50s, Marilyn Monroe, and bright red lipstick. She also loved the wildflowers of Texas and the beauty of California's Napa Valley. Wendy is survived by her 14-month-old son, Nyland Eric Powers; her partner and father of her son, Brian Guenther; mother and stepfather, Tavia and Dan Hollenkamp; father and step-mother, Charlie and Jo Powers; brother and fiancé, Eric Powers and Mary Grinnell; brother, Dusty Powers; grandmother, Vera Williams; and numerous uncles, aunts, and cousins, her niece, Katrina Efta, as well as a host of friends. Wendy was cremated and a memorial service held on June 23, 2003. Her ashes will be spread in Napa Valley. Memorial contributions may be made to a fund that will be used to purchase U.S. savings bonds for Nyland by his maternal grandparents Dan and Tavia Hollenkamp at 14419 Aden Rd., Nokesville, VA 20181. An additional, future memorial service will be held by friends at Austin's Umlauf Sculpture Gardens where a tree will be dedicated, with a plaque affixed that honors Wendy's memory.
