

William Hughart Fletcher, 92, passed away on October 13, 2015 at The Arbour at Westminster Manor in Austin, Texas. He was born on September 7, 1923 in Gary, IN to Everett Jesse and Lyal Ruth Rebecca (Hughart) Fletcher.
He graduated from DePauw University in 1945 with a B.A. in Economics and Mathematics with highest distinction and as a member of Phi Beta Kappa. In 1947 he received his M.B.A. with an emphasis in accounting from Northwestern University. In 1950 he received his J.D. from Harvard Law School. He became a CPA, winning the Elijah Watts Sells Award Silver Medal. He was admitted to the Bar in Massachusetts and the First Circuit.
He enjoyed a varied career. In 1960 he opened the Indianapolis office of Arthur Andersen & Co. and was partner in charge. He was also employed by Price Waterhouse & Co., Liberty Fund, Inc., and Maple Leaf Farms. At Hillsdale College he held the position of Vice-Chairman of the Board of Trustees and Chairman of the Finance Committee. He especially enjoyed his faculty positions teaching Finance and Accounting at Northwestern University, Northeastern University, Hillsdale College, Albion College, and University of North Florida.
During his retirement, he was able to focus on his passions. He was an avid gardener, a leader of his investment club, an impetus for family gatherings, and was known for hosting annual neighborhood Halloween parties.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Helen Elizabeth (Schultz) Fletcher; his sister, Engadine (Inky) Decker of Evanston, IL; his four children: Jean Talbot Maijala (Thomas) of Eau Claire, WI, Ann Morgan Olejko (Dr. Terry) of Powell, OH, Dr. Mark Van Fletcher (Amy) of Indianapolis, IN, and Mary Ellen Mathis (Joseph) of Austin, TX; his ten grandchildren: David Talbot Maijala (Zachieah Zurbrigg), Karen Connor Orvick (Matthew), Steven Galloway Maijala, Daniel Fletcher Olejko (Seville), Elizabeth Morgan Helle (Dr. Michael), Emily Rose Fletcher Inman (Elijah), Sarah Marguerite Fletcher, Benjamin Quinn Fletcher, Mary Melendy Jacobie (Christopher), and William Alexander Mathis; and one great grandson: Keon Dontreal Maijala. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Robert Irving Fletcher.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, October 25, 2015 at 2:00 PM at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 3003 Northland Drive, Austin, TX 78757. Burial will follow at a later date in Valparaiso, IN. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Covenant Presbyterian Church or Kiwanis Foundation International.
