
Bill,  I remember your dad from years ago at Brae Brun. I know now he was one of the few men of God I was around as a youth. I wish I could have talked with him about how Jesus became my Lord and changed my life in 1976. I pray that you and your family will experance His Peace and Joy, knowing you shall see him again. To the family of Bill Hudspeth    Bill was truly an inspiration to me. He set the example, and I have tried to follow that example to this day. I wish all the young men in business today could have such an example to emulate.    My career with Gulf Printing Company started in 1959. Bill was the Sales Manager and shortly thereafter was named President. He brought me along through the ranks of Production Assistant, Assistant Superintendent, Superintendent, Board Member, and Vice-President of Plant Operations.  So you see I owe my whole career to Bill Hudspeth, to Bob Turner, and to those that followed.  I retired in 1993.    We shared several highlights working together: The first Hoe Directory Letterpress that Gulf purchased - (this was the famous Hoe bankruptcy press), "finding" the Kempwood property, construction of the Directory Plant, adding the Wood Hoe Directory Presses, and purchasing the Harris Directory Binder line.    The main quality he always demonstrated to me was how he dealt with people and problems. When a problem arose, it was never "what happened or who caused it". Bill would ask, "what can we do to fix it?"    He had many stories to tell, such as the early days of flying with Mr.Burns and the later stories of flying with Bill Dudley. He told about his experiences with Southwestern Bell people like George Garvin and others at Bracketville. He related stories about the Sales Department and the early days at Gulf Publishing.    I think I speak for all the former employees of the Gulf Printing Company when I say we could not have had a better leader and boss.    To the family, we know your loss is great. In his early years and again at the end of his life, he had very tough times.  He showed us how to persevere and to do what needs to be done without whining.    He built a distinguished career with absolute, rock-solid integrity.  He showed us the old-fashioned way to success by working hard, giving his best, treating people fairly, and delivering a quality job.      Bill was at home in his shop and skilled at fixing things, building things, painting things.  A quiet lesson to take care of our possessions and to resist the tendency to buy and discard in rapid succession.    He loved to be outdoors  not for the trophy bucks or the low handicap (though he was an excellent golfer), but to relax away from the city and spend time with family and friends.  He taught us to get up from the desk and enjoy life.    He had a delightful sense of humor and wry wit, with a wonderful ability to tell a funny story.  His example showed us how to lighten up and find the joy in life.    He wasnt very comfortable talking about deeply felt emotions, but he showed us that living them is what counts.    Together with Billie always at his side, doing everything behind the scenes to make it possible for him to live the life he wanted to the fullest, he left us a blueprint for a life of meaning and value.  We are all better because of sharing in this life.



When you played golf with Bill Hudspeth you always won.  He kept his head down and followed through.  I will miss him.
