
William L. Lindholm William Lawrence Lindholm of Lakeway, born in Mountain Grove, Missouri, on May 27, 1914, died February 15, 2006. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Eleanor; son, Robert K. Lindholm and wife Carol of Georgetown; granddaughter, Allison Hopper and husband Michael of Flower Mound, TX; grandson, Matthew Lindholm and wife Rhonda of Houston; great-granddaughters, Lauren and Megan Hopper; nephew, James Brightman and wife Sarah; and nieces, Eleanor Busskohl and husband Charles and Lieuen Boyington and husband L. R.. Mr. Lindholm graduated from the University of Missouri in 1936, and received an Honorary Doctor of Laws from Bethany College in May, 1972. He began his business career with Southwestern Bell Telephone Company in Dallas in October of 1936 as a service representative at a salary of $100 per month. He held many positions with Southwestern Bell, eventually becoming Vice-President, Texas Area, in 1963. Mr. Lindholm became President of the Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Companies in Washington, DC in 1965. He became Executive Vice-President of American Telephone & Telegraph Company in New York in April of 1970. He was elected Vice-Chairman of the Board of AT&T in 1972, and served as President of AT&T from April, 1976 to his retirement to Lakeway in April, 1977. Mr. Lindholm served on numerous corporate directorships including Shell Oil Company, 1977; Pepsico Inc., 19751977; Texas Instruments, 19771980; Austin Bancshares, 1978; 1st National Bank of Dallas; and many others. He served as President of Campaign Chairman or both in United Way Campaigns in Houston, Dallas, and Washington, DC, probably the only person to have ever served as Campaign Chairman and/or President of three major city United Way campaigns. He served as Vice-President, Dallas Junior Chamber of Commerce; a director of Junior Achievement of Metropolitan Washington 1965-1970; a director of YMCA of Metropolitan Washington, 1967-1970; Chairman of the 1969 US Savings Bond Campaign, Washington Metropolitan Area from 1968-1970; a director of the National Symphony Orchestra Association, 1967-1970 and trustee, 1973-1977; director of the Metropolitan Washington Board of Trade, 1967-1970; a member of the Executive Committee of the Downtown Lower Manhattan Association, 1973-1977; member of the Council for Financial Aid to Education, 1974-1977; National Trustee of the Federal City Council, Washington, DC, 1973-1977; Trustee of the Federal City Council, Washington, DC, 1966-1970; trustee of National Safety Council, 1973-1977; Public Trustee of Channel 26/WETA (educational TV), 1966-1970. He was Vice-President of the National Capital Area Boy Scouts of America, 1968-1970, and member of the National Council, Boy Scouts of America, 1968-1970 and National Executive Board, Boy Scouts of America, 1974-1977. He served as member of the economic Club of New York, 1970-1977; University Club of New York, 1973-1977; Business Advisory Council, Religion in American Life, 1973-1977; OIC National Industrial Advisory Council, 1976-1977; George Washington University Council for Government and Business, 1967-1970. He was a member of San Antonio Country Club; Dallas Athletic Club; Dallas Country Club; River Oaks Country Club, Houston; Congressional Country Club and Burning Tree Country Clubs, Washington, DC; and Baltusrol Golf Club, New Jersey. He was a member of Lakeway Ecumenical Church from 1977 until his death, and served as trustee several times and President of the Board of Trustees. Memorial services will be 2:00 PM, Monday, February 20, 2006 at Lakeway Church.
