William Notley Puckett

William “Bill” Notley Puckett, passed away on August 26, 2026 in Austin, Texas at the age of 79. Born in Pecos, Texas, on March 7, 1947, Bill was the son of Ernest "Dow" Puckett and Roberta Puckett (née Notley).

He was preceded in death by his parents and his two older sisters, Barbara Carpenter and Emily Notley-Puckett. Bill is survived by his wife of 50 years, Kathryn Puckett (née Stephens), of Austin, Texas. He is also survived by his brother, Milton Puckett, of Fort Stockton, Texas; his sons, Raymond Bennett Puckett and Arthur Dow Puckett; and his two grandsons, Jackson Puckett and Evan Puckett. As well as numerous nieces and nephews, who held a special place in his heart, also survive him.

Bill's journey of lifelong learning began with his graduation from The University of Texas at El Paso. His dedication to serving others was evident early in his career as he honorably served in ROTC and 2nd Lieutenant in United States Army in Military Intelligence. Bill's commitment to justice and compassion for people led him to Austin to pursue a law degree from The University of Texas in 1975. Upon graduating Bill went on to have a lengthy career as a Criminal Defense Attorney, a role he fulfilled with integrity until his retirement in 2016.

Bill was deeply involved in his community. He served many years as an Assistant Scout Master for Boy Scouts of America Troop 70. He was a member of the "Knights of the Symphony" within the Austin Women's Symphony League. Bill was also an active member of the Plum Flower Sangha, where he found peace and shared it with others. One of his proudest accomplishments was maintaining 35 years of sobriety, a testament to his resilience and strength.

Bill had a love of the outdoors. He enjoyed hiking, backpacking, and drives on the family ranch. He enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family and pets; as well as watching sports (especially football). Bill’s love of learning gave him vast amounts of knowledge on a great many topics; he was an animated conversationalist who always had stories to share and listening ear.

In memory of William “Bill” Notley Puckett, the family kindly suggests donations to Austin Humane Society, honoring Bill's generous spirit and the values he held dear. His life was a testament to the power of love, resilience, and community, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
