William Bertram Schkade

Born on May 24, 1935, in Giddings, Texas, to W. W. and Annie Marie (Kurio) Schkade, Scotty embarked on his eternal journey to be with his Heavenly Father on September 3rd, 2023, at the respected age of 88. He was surrounded by his beloved family during his final moments.

Scotty's formative years were spent laboring in the family's automotive parts business, a foundation that would later underpin his extensive mechanical insight and tireless work ethic. Following a brief but impactful service in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1958, he returned to Texas and settled in Austin. There, he began his career at Capital Chevrolet, subsequently pursuing specialized training to master the art of Corvair design preservation. Propelled by his entrepreneurial spirit, Scotty embarked on his own venture in 1965, founding "Scotty's Automotive." With unparalleled expertise in Corvairs, he earned the illustrious signature of the "Corvair King" and dedicated countless hours to building a thriving enterprise.

Scotty's unwavering commitment extended beyond his professional pursuits. As a devoted member of the Texas Independent Garageman's Association, he actively served in various capacities, notably as the Grievance Committee Chairman from 1980 to 1995. Guided by a deep-rooted belief in equity and respect for all, he displayed genuine compassion towards the homeless individuals he encountered, striving to extend his assistance to them in their time of need. Scotty passionately wished for the welfare and prosperity of every soul he met.

A true project man at heart, Scotty approached every endeavor with determination, a can-do spirit and a steadfast do-it-yourselfer. Scotty gradually allowed himself the luxury of relaxation in his later years. He indulged his passion for travel, cherished moments while fishing with family, and valued the opportunity to forge new connections with people from all walks of life. Scotty also had a remarkable talent for infusing joy into the lives of his grandchildren and great-granddaughters. He reveled in the role of a fun-loving grandpa and great-grandpa, present at their sports games and enthusiastically cheering them on, creating cherished memories that will forever resonate in their hearts.

Scotty is survived by his devoted wife of 63 years, Bernice Schkade, and their two loving daughters, Kimberly Hill and her husband (Brad) of Austin, and Stephanie Willie and her husband (Rusty) of Lakeway. He leaves behind a legacy through his five cherished grandchildren: Mindy Stanton Busch and her husband (Grant) of Dallas, Jacob Willie of Lakeway, Kelsey Hill and Kacy Hill of Austin, Kirby Hill and his wife (Kylie) of Katy, Texas. Additionally, Scotty is remembered by his step-grandchildren, Matthew and his wife (Andrea) of Round Rock, and Paige Willie of Round Rock and the newest generation of his lineage, including great-granddaughter Eleanor Louise Busch of Dallas and two step-great-granddaughters, Ileana and Audrey Belle Willie of Round Rock. He also held a deep friendship with Jim McCarn, who became like a son to him.

William is also survived by his brother Floyd Schkade and wife (Mary Ann), of Pflugerville, sister-in-law, Bea Schkade of Brighton, Michigan.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Monroe Schkade of Brighton, Michigan.

A memorial service to celebrate Scotty's life will be held at Redeemer Lutheran Church, located at 1500 West Anderson Lane, Austin, TX, 78757, on September 16, 2023, commencing at 10:30 a.m.
