

William C. (Bill) Smith, age 90, went peacefully to the loving arms of our Lord on November 3, 2009 at Brighton Gardens, Austin, Texas. He was born June 11, 1919 in Saluda County, South Carolina, to James Arthur and Sarah Barnes Smith. His siblings were Horace B, Mae Caroline, and Sophie Eleanor Smith, all deceased. He was educated in Johnston, South Carolina, Berry College, Rome Georgia, and The University of Texas, Austin. During WWII he was a member of the United States Army Air Force. He was stationed in Europe and flew photoreconnaissance in his beloved P 38 plane. He was assigned to the 22nd Photo Squadron and after the war retired as a Major. The love of his life was his family. He was a devoted and loving husband to Helen Davis (1943-1977) until her death and Edith Winterrowd (1978-2007) until her death. He was a very honorable, caring example for those around him. He was a cotton farmer in Pecos, Texas, for many years. He and his wife, Edith, received the Key to the City of Pecos, and he was a Deacon in the First Baptist Church. He retired in San Angelo in 2000, and moved to Austin in 2004. He loved his church, family, playing bridge, feeding the animals, growing plants, and reading. He attended Tarrytown Methodist Church in Austin. He is survived by five step children: Maxine Hudson and husband Ray, Linda Laughlin and husband Greg, Cary Winterrowd and wife Vicki, Dennis Winterrowd and wife Mary, Lonnie Winterrowd and wife Dawn, 10 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews in Texas and South Carolina. Visitation will be held at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home at 3125 Lamar Boulevard, Austin, from 6 to 8 pm on Thursday, November 5th. Graveside services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 7, 2009 at Mt. Evergreen Cemetery in Pecos. Pastor Greer Willis of First Baptist Church will officiate.
