
Winton Eaheart Matthews (Slick) passed away November 12, 2005. He was born on January 26, 1920 to Roy and Margaret Matthews in Albany, Texas. Slick attended Texas A&M University. He volunteered for service during World War II and became a Colonel in the U.S. Air Force. He served in the Pacific Theater where he received the Purple Heart, Distinguished Flying Cross, and many other commendations and service awards. While serving in China, Slicks Fifth Flying Group joined the Chinese Air Force as a composite wing. In 1958 Slick, an amiable West Texan, met and married Austinite Nancy Reed. Soon after (1962) he retired from the Air Force. Retaining his pilots license, Slick became a pilot for the State of Texas and was for many years the pilot for Agriculture Secretary, John C. White. Slick was an avid golfer, lover of dogs and a friend to everyone. He loved to speak his brand of Chinese. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Nancy; son, Winton of Washington, D.C.; sister-in-law, Alyce Jeanne Rawlinson of Denver, Colorado; two nieces; cousin, Glen Reynolds of Ft. Worth, Texas; and a legion of good friends, who will miss him greatly. His parents and a son, Reed, preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 16, 2005 at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home. Graveside services will follow on Thursday at 1:00 p.m. in Albany Cemetery, Albany, Texas. Honorary Pallbearers are Thom Miller, Jack Balagia, S. A. Garza, Frank Johnson, Bob Burrill, Dick Obenhaus, Matt Roberts, Joe Scepansky, Clyde Smith, John Matthews, Glen Reynolds, and Yang Ho Yu.
