Yolanda (Esquivel) Esteban was born March 18,1947 to Mr. Refugio Esquivel and Mrs. Sofia Garcia Esquivel. She grew up in Austin/Del Valle, Texas, with her siblings, Jesse, John, Angela, Oralia, Leandro, Stella, Virginia, Refugio Jr, and Guadalupe. She attended Del Valle High School. After completing Del Valle High School, Yolanda worked many years for several county and city offices. She worked for Travis County Human Services where she later retired.
The following is a comment from Penny Gardner, one of Sister Esteban’s colleagues: “Yolanda Esteban was a kindhearted, giving person. She was a hard worker, and her children are the same. I worked with Yolanda for many years and she will be missed by everyone who knew her. I pray for peace and comfort for her family”
She was united in holy matrimony to Mr. Alfredo Esteban. In 1966 Alfredo met Ms. Yolanda Esquivel through mutual work at the East Austin Neighborhood Center. After sweeping Yolanda off her feet, the couple became inseparable and were married. The marriage lasted for fifty-one years (51 yrs) until his death. From this matrimony were born six (6) children, five (5) sons and one (1) daughter: Alfredo, Luis, Cristobal "Chris”, Francisco "Frank", Miguel, and their daughter, Laurelia.
The following are precious memories from Sister Esteban’s children: Miguel: “I was in the elementary school choir and we were picked to sing at City Hall where my mother worked. I felt so special having the privilege to sing for my mom and the city. I remember the smile on her face and being proud of me. That was the peak of my singing career.” Chris: “I can remember picking mom up throughout the years, and talking about work. She taught me that family comes first.” Frank: “I remember my mom took care of Kory and Amie when they were babies while I went to work. She adored all of her grandbabies.” Luis: “My most cherished memory of my mother is when she accepted our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. That moment marked a profound change in her life, and I knew that everything would be alright for her,” Laurelia: “Mom taught me what it looks like to care deeply. To keep going when things are hard, and to show up for people you love even when you are tired. She had a way of making everything feel better.”
On April 20, 2003, Yolanda accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior after attending an Easter presentation and hearing the Gospel of Jesus Christ preached by Bishop Eddie E. Willis, Sr. Sister Yolanda Esteban became an active member in the New Covenant Church, serving as an usher, and dedicating much of her time wrapping shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Gift, a New Covenant Church community service, giving gifts to children during the Christmas season. She was one of the instructors on the New Covenant Church Summer Youth Employment Program Committee. The Church enjoyed hearing Sister Yolanda’s testimony….and about her love and faith in the Lord! She was a woman of great, great faith. The New Covenant Church will truly miss her.
