

Zelma Schmidt Garrett, 87, a longtime resident of Austin, died April 14, 2007 at Salado Creek Living Center in San Antonio. Zelma was born in Niederwald, Texas in 1920 but lived all over the USA in her life as a wife to Air Force pilot Charles Garrett. They were married in 1941 and celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary in 1995, the year he died. She was very proud of her marriage and her life as a service wife. Zelma was active in a number of service organizations in Austin, including the Pan American Roundtable (an international friendship/cultural group), the Retired Officer's Wives Club, the Lago Vista Women's Club, and was a member of Good Shepherd Episcopal Church. Zelma Garrett is survived by daughter Nancy, son Charles and his wife Jennifer, along with her sister Willie Hufstedler of Kerrville and sister-in-law Betty Garrett of Abilene, Texas, many nephews and nieces and grandnephews and grandnieces, friends, and her beloved dog Tai. She is preceded in death by her husband, Charles, her brother-in-law Charles Hufstedler, her brothers Neil and Harvey, and her grandson Andrew Charles. Funeral service will be Friday, April 20 at 11:00 a.m. at Randolph AFB Chapel #2 in San Antonio, TX. Burial will follow at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery.
