I was in his class in 1966, he was a good teacher, I on the other hand may not have been the most attentive student. I have often thought of Mr. Garvey over the years and wondered how he was. I'm so sorry for the families loss.

My wife Barbara and I were saddened with the news of Mr. Garvey's passing. I was in Mr. Garvey's first 6th grade class in September of 1953 at the old Hills School. Years later many of us would often stop by at the end of the school day for a visit. He was always happy to see us and answer our questions about careers in teaching. Even as an adult I never referred to him as Jim. It was always a sign of respect to call him "Mr. Garvey"! He had raised the bar with his enthusiasm and caring for all of his students. Can you imagine how many students are carrying something positive they learned from him in sixth grade. I am talking about values such as fair play, treating yourself and others with respect and of course being accountable for ones actions. He taught more than just math and English.
We were so happy that he attended our 50th High School Reunion. He had not changed a bit and we all enjoyed his stories about us. I had found an old report card from 6th grade and showed it to him along with an over due book report. (56 Years over due) We all laughed and realized that we were the
lucky ones to have had him in our early lives.
A few years ago I received a phone call from Mister Garvey. He had read something in the newspaper about me and wanted to see how I was doing. We had a great conversation and a few laughs. I really appreciated that call and his interest. After a brief few years in teaching I went on to a forty year career in the New York City Fire Department. Mr. Garvey often spoke of family members in the Fire Department. Conversations with him about careers helped me decide on that career path.
I hope that your memories and faith get you thru this difficult time and also that you appreciate that Mr. Garvey had such a positive impact on me and so many others.
God Bless!
