James F. Rooney, a beloved figure in the world of wrestling and a proud patriot, passed away peacefully on September 22, 2025, at the age of 95. Born on June 5, 1930, James lived a life filled with passion, dedication, and service to his community.
As a young man, Jim honed his athletic abilities on the wrestling mats of Mepham High School in Bellmore, NY, before continuing his passion at Syracuse University. His love for the sport remained a central part of his life, and after proudly serving his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict, he found his calling as a wrestling referee.
Known by all as “The Roon,” Jim spent an astounding 52 years officiating high school wrestling matches, making him one of the longest-tenured referees in U.S. history. His exceptional dedication and expertise earned him a place in the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, a fitting tribute to his lifelong commitment to the sport.
Jim was a man of integrity, a trusted official whose presence on the mat was both respected and revered by athletes, coaches, and fans alike. His passion for wrestling extended far beyond his own participation; he dedicated much of his life to preserving the integrity of the sport and mentoring younger generations of officials, ensuring the future of wrestling would remain as vibrant as it was when he first began.
Beyond his wrestling career, Jim was known for his unwavering devotion to his family and community. His strength, wisdom, and kindness shaped all who knew him. He was a loving husband to his wife, Cecilia, whom he was married to for 63 years, until her passing. He was also a devoted father to his daughter, Annemarie, who preceded him in death.
Jim is survived by his children Joseph, Maryann, Elizabeth, Patricia, and James; his grandchildren Bridget, Tara, Megan, Maureen, Michael, Kevin, Olivia, Sarah, and Jace, and great-grandchildren. He was also cherished by a wide circle of extended family and friends.
Jim’s legacy will live on in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him. “The Roon” may have stepped off the mat, but his spirit and impact will forever remain a part of the wrestling world and the many lives he touched.
