Marian Jean Hubbard, a loving mother and grandmother from Bay Shore, passed away on February 16, 2025, at the age of 85. Born on July 6, 1939, in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, she was the cherished daughter of Frank and Vivian Piccolo. Marian’s early life in Brooklyn revolved around her loving two-family home, where she lived with her parents, brother Sal, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins, whom she considered siblings.
Marian, her younger brother Sal, and their parents moved to Bay Shore, NY in 1952, where her father owned several businesses. Marian graduated from Bay Shore High School in 1957 with lifelong friends Maureen (Jordan), Barbara (Arcomano), Shirley (Fey), Mary Ann (Tennien, also known as Chubby), and Judy (Tidwell). For years they gathered weekly at their favorite lunch spot, Schiller’s, in Bay Shore, where they laughed, cried, and shared the joys of their lives.
After graduating from Bay Shore High School, Marian attended Adelphi University and earned her bachelor’s degree in social work. During this time, she met the love of her life, James Hubbard, when her cousin Ann Donley (née Spadaro) set them up on a blind date. They were married on September 4, 1961. During her first year of married life, Marian worked as a social worker in New York's foster care system.
Among Marian’s most significant accomplishments was raising her four children, whom she regarded as her pride and joy. After the untimely death of her husband in 1983, she worked in a classroom with developmentally disabled children at South Country School. She eventually became a substance abuse educator for the Town of Islip, holding that position until her retirement in 2003. She worked part-time as a crisis hotline representative for a few years afterward. Marian took pride in being one of the founders of the Suffolk Center for Children with Developmental Disabilities in Smithtown, NY.
Marian is survived by her four loving children, Vicki, her late husband James, Alyssa, Julie (with Dan), Aaron, and his wife Alexis. Marian was blessed to have ten grandchildren: Francesca (with Steven), Alexandra, Jonathan (Leah), Tyler, Sophie, Addison, Emily, Jake (with Meghan), and Lucas (with Jenny). She was a great-grandmother to Christopher James (C.J).
Marian's loss is deeply felt within her immense circle of family and friends. Her memory will endure and inspire kindness, strength, resilience, and generosity in those she touched.
There will be a viewing at Claude R. Boyd-Spencer Funeral Home in West Babylon, NY, on Friday, February 21, 2025, from 2:00 pm to 4:30 PM and 7:00 pm to 9:00 PM.
