Hassell, Pauline M. of Beverly Hills, California, passed away peacefully in her sleep at age 91 on May 23, 2018. Formerly of Fort Salonga, New York. Born and raised in West Hartford, Connecticut, the daughter of the late U.S. Army Major, George E. Malone, and his wife, Mary. Sister of the late Edmund Malone, Mary Muldowney, and Eleanor Zitek. Mother of Edwin, of Santa Cruz, Calif., Pamela, of Los Angeles, Timothy, of Newport Beach, Calif., Mark, of La Habra, Calif., Christopher, of W. Harrison, N.Y., Justin, of New York City, Kent, of Lakewood, Calif., Todd, of Anaheim, Calif., Suzanne (deceased), and Dawn, of San Francisco, Calif.
Pauline graduated with honors from Notre Dame College on Staten Island, New York, in 1948 with her Bachelor’s Degree in History and with minors in French and Philosophy. She married her late husband, Edwin, of Brooklyn, New York, and raised a family on Long Island before moving to Southern California with her husband and younger children in the late seventies where she resided for 40 years.
The mother of 10 children and many grandchildren, she loved and was deeply devoted to her family, her many and varied friends, and her adored pets. She had a great love and appreciation of the poetry of Shelley, Frost, and Masefield as well as the beauty of the natural world. She loved being of Irish and English descent, and had a keen knowledge of her ancestry and the history of those countries. She was a rescuer of abandoned animals. Most of all she loved life itself.
Pauline was an elegant woman with a deep compassion for all people and living things. She was an uplifting and excellent conversationalist; from her there were always kind words and empathy. She had a lifelong and passionate interest in the arts, culture, literature, music, philosophy, astrology, astronomy, and history. She loved to write and traveled the world with several of her children. She was deeply loved by her sons and daughters, grandchildren, relatives, and friends, and will be greatly missed by all.
