Thomas J. Germano

Thomas J. Germano, Ph.D., a legendary labor leader, respected scholar and arbitrator, devoted father and grandfather, and lifelong champion of working people, lived a remarkable life defined by courage, compassion and an unwavering commitment to human dignity. Tom died peacefully at the age of 86, on August 27, 2026, after a long and tenacious battle with multiple myeloma, a blood cancer.

Tom’s extraordinary journey from the streets of Chelsea and postal routes of New York City to the highest levels of scholarship reflected his deep intelligence, determination, and belief in education as a force for opportunity and justice.

Born in the working-class neighborhood of Chelsea in New York City, Tom faced profound hardship early in life, including the loss of his mother when Tom was only 10 years old. Tom held many jobs (some simultaneously) and understood from an early age the value of hard work, sound judgment, astute diplomacy, and a terrific sense of humor.

As a young New York City letter carrier, he delivered mail along the same streets where he had grown up. While working full-time, raising a family, and attending night school, Tom became one of the principal rank-and-file leaders of the Great Postal Strike of 1970, the first, and one of the largest, strikes against the federal government in American history. Postal workers, many of whom worked second jobs yet still struggled to support their families, risked their livelihoods to demand fair wages, collective bargaining rights and basic dignity. Beginning in New York City, the workers’ historic wildcat strike spread nationwide and involved approximately 200,000 workers, forever changing the United States Postal Service and improving the lives of generations of postal employees.

Tom’s leadership during that historic moment earned him an enduring place in American labor history. Decades later, the National Association of Letter Carriers honored him as an honorary permanent member. In 2020, Tom shared his memories of the strike in a nationally broadcast conversation on NPR’s Morning Edition. Reflecting on why the postal workers took such an extraordinary stand, Tom said, “Sometimes you have to do a moral thing, and a dignity thing.” He then expressed the hope that captured the essence of his life: to be remembered as “somebody who helped people when he could.”

That is precisely how he will be remembered.

Juggling career, education and family, Tom earned a Ph.D. in Sociology from the City University of New York’s Graduate Center. Tom’s doctoral dissertation Labor Relations in the United States Postal Service is considered the seminal work on the subject. Tom taught at Cornell University’s School of Industrial and Labor Relations (ILR) and Queens College, both in New York. As Director of Cornell University’s ILR School, Long Island Extension, from 1976-2003, he educated and inspired generations of labor leaders, professionals and students. Tom was a pioneer on preventing workplace violence, speaking and teaching worldwide on this critical subject before it was widely recognized. Many public and private individuals frequently called on Tom for counsel and support, which he readily shared.

A highly respected labor arbitrator and mediator, both management and labor sought out Tom for his wisdom, fairness, skilled diplomacy, and humanity, and he resolved thousands of difficult labor disputes. Tom founded the Labor Management Center on Long Island and served on the board of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW). Tom served on panels for the American Arbitration Association, National Mediation Board, Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, and numerous other local and national industry panels. He regularly resolved disputes involving the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC), American Postal Workers Union (APWU), NY State United Teachers (NYSUT), Long Island Railroad (LIRR), Nassau and Suffolk Counties, and others. Tom actively heard cases until 2020, when he chose to retire.

His career united the practical knowledge of a working letter carrier, the moral conviction of a labor organizer and the disciplined insight of a scholar. He never forgot where he came from or whom his work was meant to serve.

For all his historic accomplishments, however, Tom’s greatest source of pride was his family. He was the father of four children: Elizabeth Germano, who predeceased him in August 2021; Thomas Germano; Andrew Germano; and Judith Germano (husband, Michael Bonarti). He was also the loving stepfather of James Miller (wife, Shana), and Patti Miller Retzlaff (husband, Todd). Tom was the proud grandfather of Jesse Forgione (wife, Hallie); Kate Forgione; Linda Forgione; Amy Germano-Daum; Ariel Rose Germano; Sarah Grace Germano; Anthony Germano; Andrew John “AJ” Germano; Christina Bonarti; Matthew Bonarti; Kai Miller; and Lucas Miller. He delighted in becoming a great-grandfather to Oliver (Amy’s son) and Athena Victoria (Jesse’s daughter). Tom passed on to his children and grandchildren his tenacity, strong work ethic, respect for the value of education, and commitment to justice, integrity and fairness.

Tom shared important chapters of his life with two remarkable and exceptionally kind women. He is survived by Rosalie Chamberlain of Ithaca, New York, his first wife and the mother of their four children. Married from 1961 until 1993, Tom and Rosalie shared a bond that began when they were teenagers and endured for decades as loving parents and grandparents. In his final years, Tom considered Rosalie one of his dearest and most treasured friends. Tom was predeceased by his beloved second wife, Mary Ann [Russell] Germano, whom he married in 2000 and deeply mourned after her death in 2008. Tom cherished Mary Ann, and the years of dancing, travel and adventure they shared always held a special place in his heart.

Tom was predeceased by his deeply loved brother, Robert Germano, and is survived by his adored sister, Patricia Germano Canova. He was a beloved godfather, uncle to many nieces and nephews, and a cherished friend, mentor and source of strength to countless others.

Tom’s influence can be measured by landmark advancements to American labor, but his truest legacy lives in the people whose lives he made better. That legacy lives in the family who loved and adored him, generations of workers who benefited from his courage, students and colleagues enriched by his wisdom, and innumerable friends and others who experienced his kindness, generosity and wit firsthand. Tom was a labor legend, but also something greater: a good and deeply humane man who spent his life helping others. His family will carry his example forward with immeasurable pride.

A memorial gathering will be held in Tom’s honor on Monday, September 7 at the Claude R. Boyd-Spencer Funeral Home 2:00 pm-4:30 pm & 5:30 pm-7:30 pm, and a funeral mass on Tuesday, September 8 at 10:15am at St. Joseph’s R.C. Church, both in Babylon, New York.
