William Earl Holmes was born on November 5th, 1924 in Rochester, NY. He attended Monroe High School where he lettered in Cross Country. As a boy he loved sailing on Lake Ontario while spending summers at his parent's cottage in Sodus Point, NY. It was there he made lifelong friendships.
Bill Served in the United States Coast Guard in WWII. He received a Bachelor of education degree from NY State Teachers College in Buffalo, where he met his wife Joan. They have been married for sixty-seven years. Bill later earned a Masters Degree.
A career teacher, Bill was chairman of the West Babylon High School Industrial Arts Department, President of the Babylon Village Historical Society, a member of the Long Island Yacht Club, South Bay Cruising Club and the Babylon Methodist Church where he served as church historian. He and Joan designed and created sets for the James Street Players community theater. Bill had a special skill for crafting models of sailing ships, those he had sailed and those he and Joan had visited on trips.
An avid sailor, Bill raced on the Great South Bay. While acting as President of the International Penguin class Dinghy Association, Bill represented his fleet in an International Regatta in Brazil.
He is survived by his wife Joan, daughter June, (Steven), daughter Carol husband (Gene), . He is also survived by grandson Rigel (Julie) and son William; grandson George and Charles (Jeanette) and daughters Victoria and Briana.
A memorial Service will be held at the Babylon Methodist Church, 21 James Street, Babylon, NY on Saturday, August 31st at 2:00pm. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the church.
