Al was born in Avery Oklahoma to George Madison Evans and Florence Hadley Evans. He spent his early years in Ripley, Oklahoma with his 2 sisters, Hazel and Viola and 3 Brothers Bill, Clarence, Lester. His father passed away when he was 6 years old and he and his brothers helped support his mother until he left for California in 1941.
Al joined the Navy in 1942 and served as a baker aboard ship. When he got out of the Navy, he went to work in the Oilfields of Kern County but continued to bake for the family and church functions. Fresh baked bread and cinnamon rolls were his specialty and you could smell the bread all over the neighborhood when he was baking.
While living in Oklahoma, he met his darling wife to be, Corban Alzona Plunkett while they were both attending grammar school. They were married at the Foursquare Church in Bakersfield on September 7, 1945. They were partners and best friends for over 55 years until Corban passed away on April 22, 2001.
Al and Corban bought their first home in 1951 where they lived and raised their 3 children, Vance, Lance (twin boys) and Almeta. They continued to live in this home for over 50 years. It was a place filled with love where all the children, grandchildren and great grandchildren played until 2011.
Al was a man of great faith. When you talked with him, he would always tell you his stories and then about the Lord. His favorite phrase when you would hug him or shake his hand was “I love you and appreciate you”. And he meant it. He was a faithful servant and dedicated his life to helping others.
Al was preceded in death by his mother and father, his wife Corban, his sisters, Hazel Spencer and Viola Teeples, his brothers Lester Evans and Clarence Evans. He is survived by his brother Bill Evans, his 3 children, Vance Evans and his wife Nancy, Lance Evans and his wife Libby, and Almeta Pratt, 7 grandchildren, Terri Lee Wright and her husband Troy, Tony Evans and his wife Tonya, Matthew Evans and his wife Madeline, Brian Pratt and his wife Sarah, Missty Wilson and her husband Brian, Melissa Perry and her husband Matt, Megan Edejer and 11 great grandchildren, Crystal and James Wright, Danielle and Savannah Evans, Carley, Cassidy, and Anthony Evans, Katherine Pratt, Andrea Wilson, Bobby and Logan Perry.
A Celebration of Al’s life will be held, Sunday, September 15, 2013 at 11:30 am at the Chapel of Grace, 613 Lincoln Ave, Oildale, CA. 92308
