Raised in Hampden, John graduated from Baltimore Polytechnic Institute in 1971. From there, he electrified his way through life—literally and figuratively—working as a high voltage electrician for the Maryland Transportation Authority. He was a proud and longstanding member of the IBEW Local, dedicating over 50 years to the trade.
John was a 32nd-degree Mason and active in the Scottish Rite. His involvement with the Shriners was one of his greatest sources of pride, and he carried their values with him every day. His deep sense of tradition extended to every part of his life, he was old-school, no-nonsense, and a firm believer that there was a right way (his way) to do things.
In his younger days, you could find John at the Medfield Rec Center, running the courts in pickup basketball or playing in spirited games of softball. Later in life, he traded in the cleats for cue sticks and chrome, spending many hours shooting pool or riding his beloved Harley Softail, and going down to Ocean City, Maryland. There, he'd sit and watch the sunsets, with peace in his heart.
A true foodie before the term became trendy, John had a passion for both discovering great restaurants and cooking up his own masterpieces. His ribs were legendary, and his crab soup was a point of pride. He loved nothing more than sharing a home-cooked meal with friends, family, or just about anyone who appreciated good food.
John was strict, often blunt, and entirely unapologetic—but those who knew him best knew the big heart behind the tough exterior. He was generous, funny in his own sharp-witted way, and always there when you needed him.
He is survived by Donna Schaefers, Tina Hare, John Roberts, Damon Roberts, a sister, nieces, nephews and friends. He is preceded in death by his son John Hare, Jr.
You can remember John by simply cooking a rack of ribs, enjoying a bowl of crab soup, and raise a glass to a life well-lived.
