November 27, 1924 – February 8, 2013
Robert Andrew Barber was born on November 27, 1924 to John and Bethia Barber in Fort Saskatchewan, AB and raised on a farm with five siblings in Looma Vista and Ministik Districts. In the early 60’s, Robert moved with his brother, Jim to ranch in the Barrhead area. He later sold the ranch and moved into town in 1998. Robert is predeceased by his brothers, Eric (Flo) and Jim Barber; sister, Mary Barber; brother-in-law, Ed Galpin; and nephew, Robert Thurlborn. He is survived by his sisters, Jane Galpin of Duncan, BC and Margaret Thurlborn of Black Creek, BC; nephews, Jim Galpin (Marilyn), Ed Galpin, Steve Galpin (Sylvia), and Reg Thurlborn (Leslie); nieces, Beth Zimmerman (Terry) and Wendy Thurlborn and their families. Robert will be remembered for his willingness to help out his neighbors using his skill with cattle and equipment. He carried on ranching alone after the sudden death of his brother, Jim in 1981. He had a kind and generous side and enjoyed joking with friends and never gave up teasing his sisters and niece, Beth. In his younger days, he enjoyed racing his horse, Buster against Jim and his horse, making jumps over railings well out of sight of their mother. In his later life, he enjoyed lake and ice fishing. Robert had to deal with health problems recently, but was able to maintain his independence until last year or so. He had to move into the Hillcrest last fall and lost his battle with cancer on February 8, 2013. A Memorial Service was held on Friday, February 15, 2013 at 1:00 pm at Rose Garden Chapel. Donations in memory of Robert are gratefully accepted to the University of Alberta Burn Unit (8440 – 112 Street N.W., Edmonton, AB T6G 9Z9) or a Charity of One’s Choice.
The family would sincerely like to thank Dr. Tawfik and the staff of the Hillcrest Lodge and the Keir Care Centre involved in Robert’s care. Special thanks to Randy and Denise Lively, Chuck and Adele Nichols, and others who were true friends as his health deteriorated.
