He was born James Robert Mitchell on July 1, 1954 in Memphis, Tennessee as the biological son of Nancy Sue Mitchell (Cookeville, TN). He was personally chosen and adopted by Charles Avery and Juanita Suddath Avery on October 1, 1954. He attended Overton High School in Memphis. He was predeceased by his parents, Nancy Mitchell (2005), Charles Avery (2011), and Juanita Suddath Price (2015) and his wife, Beverly Avery (2015).
Andy spent the bulk of his life as a General Contractor and owner of Avery Remodeling and Construction in Memphis and Shelby County. After retiring from the construction industry, Andy pursued other interests including giving back to his community on the Fayette County Road Board. In the last few years of his life,
Andy was fortunate to work combining two of his favorite past times – talking and fast cars – as the Track Announcer at Memphis International Raceway in Millington, TN.
Andy was also a devoted servant of the Lord. He was a member for over 25 years of Bellevue Baptist Church before recently moving his membership over to The Orchard Church in Collierville. He spent many years volunteering in the Prison Ministry at Bellevue as well as ministering to at-risk children at Youth Villages.
Andy is survived by two children, Andrew (Amelia) of Collierville, TN and Nicole of Atlanta, GA and three grandchildren, Ann Marie and Charlie Avery of Collierville, and Mason Avery of Atlanta, GA. Recently, Andy and his son had requested and received his official record of adoption and discovered a host of new extended family. They had the pleasure of meeting some of them prior to his death including maternal first cousins, Debi Tucker (David) of Nashville and Sandi Mitchell of Columbia, TN. Andy also has a half-brother on his maternal side, Baker Green (Debra) living in Kansas City, Missouri.
Per Andy’s wishes, he is being cremated and afterwards a private memorial service will be held. Later this year, the family will scatter Andy and Bev’s ashes together. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Direct Relief COVID-19 Response Fund: https://www.directrelief.org/emergency/coronavirus-outbreak/
