Bettye Fay Mitchell, celebrated her 85th birthday on November 18th. We take great comfort knowing that on December 7, 2020 she walked into the arms of her loving husband of 39 years, James “Russ” Mitchell (d).
Bettye was born in Perry County, TN as one of eight to parents Alvin (d) and Gertie Grooms (d). Bettye leaves those that remember her fondly: twin brother Bobby Grooms(Judy d.), brother Billy Grooms (Margaret), sister Helen Eason (Charles) and many nieces and nephews who loved and supported their Aunt Bettye. Her siblings that passed before her were J.W., Kenneth, and Kelton Grooms and sister, Ellen Grooms Story.
Bettye traveled the globe as an Air Force wife and made many houses a home with their two daughters, Susan (Bob d.) and Tami (Glenn). When the time came, they retired to Memphis, TN to watch their beloved granddaughters, Amanda (Brian), Emily (Ronnie), and Alyssa (Matt) grow up. Bettye was a faithful member of her churches over the years: Gragg Avenue, Stage Road, and Berclair Churches of Christ. She loved to rock the babies in the church nursery and did so for over twenty years. Bettye was an active member of her Golden Ager church group where she made many travel memories with her precious life long friends. Bettye also spent time volunteering at the nursing home styling hair for the residents. She was an enthusiastic University of Memphis basketball fan. Even after Russ passed away, Bettye attended games and traveled to conference championships to cheer on the Tigers.
Bettye was lucky to have watched all four of her great grandsons grow up to be wonderful young men. Her great-grandsons, Mitchell, James, and Russ were named for her husband and great-grandson Garrison plays high school basketball just like Bettye did.
Bettye loved her beloved dog Marley and they were close companions for the last several years. An avid Price is Right viewer, Bettye was also known for her wonderful cooking and loved to talk recipes. Each family member will carry her recipes and special serving pieces with loving memories of her.
A private graveside service to be held.
