William (Bill) England Thompson passed away on December 3, 2022, at the age of 88. He was born on June 19, 1934. To many, he was known simply as “Coach” because of his years teaching and coaching at Middleton High School, Rainshaven Jr. High, Lanier Jr. High, and Wooddale Middle School. However you knew him, the one quality that stood out was his gentle and giving nature. He was a strong and encouraging man who supported his children and grandchildren in all of their pursuits. As a dad and grandfather, he attended countless football, basketball, soccer and baseball games as well as dance recitals, band competitions, and concerts. If he saw a need, he met that need whether it was his family or his friends. He “spotted” many a $20 when he could help. He loved all things University of Tennessee and Memphis and attended many football games at both universities. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinal baseball fan, and he loved all things Christmas. Most importantly, he knew the Lord Jesus as his personal Lord and Savior and faithfully attended Bellevue Baptist Church for many years and most recently Faith Baptist Church, Bartlett.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Dorothy Thompson, and his sister, Ann Hall. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Joy, two sons, Ed (Karen) and Mark (Laurie), 6 grandchildren, Jeff (Kristen) Thompson, Logan Thompson (fiancé Chelsea), Corinne (Kyle) Huffman, Hailey Thompson, Darby (Stephen) McKnight and Faith Thompson and 2 great granddaughters, Lorelai Huffman and Scottie Mae Thompson.
The family will receive friends beginning at 10:00 a.m., Friday, December 9, 2022 with a funeral service to follow at 12:00 p.m. at Faith Baptist Church, 3755 N. Germantown Parkway, Bartlett, TN. Services are under the direction of Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens-Bartlett.
